Today we learned about Pocahontas! We first asked the kids what they knew about Pocahontas. They didn't know much about her, so they were very excited to learn about who she was and why she was important. We first talked about her early life, such as where she was born, the other names she has, and how she was the daughter of the chief of the Powhatan tribe. We then talked about John Smith, and who he was, and his relationship with Pocahontas, such as how she saved his life. Next, we talked about how she became kidnapped by English settlers and imprisoned in a ship, and the settlers demanded a ransom. The students were shocked to hear that Pocahontas' father did not pay the full ransom, and how she had to stay imprisoned. Then, we talked about John Rolfe, and how their marriage strengthen relationships between the Native Americans and settlers. Finally, we talked about Pocahontas' late life, her child, and how she passed away. We wrapped up the session by taking a quiz to see if the kids are either Pocahontas, Merida, or Mulan.
