Today, we learned about cicadas! We first asked the kids what is one thing they like about cicadas, and another thing they dislike about cicadas. A popular answer among them was that they liked how colorful the cicada is, but the thing that dislike most about them is that they make so much noise. To kick off the lesson, we first talked about the three different types of life cycles there are that a cicada can have, and that the life cycle that the cicadas we see have is the periodical cycle. Then, we talked about the nymph stage for a cicada, and how they don't have proper wings and have strong digging legs. Next, we talked about cicadas as adults, and how they emerge from their exoskeleton, what they eat, and where they live. We then talked about their emergence every 17 years and discussed possibilities on why they do this, as well as going over some fun facts. We wrapped up the class by taking a fun quiz to see what insect you are!
