In today's session, we learned about Evolution! First, we talked about what we thought evolution meant (in our own words)! We had a lot of different definitions and then read out the actual definition of evolution. Then we through a timeline of events and human types in those times. The kids learned what occurred 65 million years ago, 3 million years ago, and when the first human appeared! Later, we talked about the first human skeleton discovered, Lucy. They even had the opportunity to see a cartoonized picture of Lucy. All the kids were shocked that Lucy was so much shorter than humans today. We then learned how scientists discovered the things of the past (hint: fossils and artifacts) Coming back to the timeline, we learned about the "Handy Man" humans, the people after Lucy's people and they didn't know how to make a fire! Then came the Upright Man, the first group of people to explore the Earth. Next came Neanderthals, the short-lived people that were most similar to human now! The kids loved seeing the similarities and differences we had from these people. The last human species we talked about was the Cro-Magnon people, who made the first cave paintings. Near the end of the lesson, we did a quick recap and took a quiz to test out new knowledge! As always, we played some games and took a couple of fun quizzes to give us a brain break but still enjoy our newfound knowledge. To end of the class, we discussed any questions we had and talked about any future topics that the kids wanted!
