Today we talked about books! The meeting began with the kids discussing their favorite books and book characters. It was wonderful to see how well they connected with the stories, even though they followed topics that the kids hadn't necessarily experienced, themselves. Next, we went through individual genres, looking at examples and key words related to each. For example, for the "Mystery" genre, the key words were "puzzle", "unexplained", and "clues." Those are the types of identifying factors that the kids can use to figure out the genre of the book they're reading! We also noticed that many books combine these genres in order to create their story. Another discussion point was book-to-screen adaptations, and the different directions they can take from the original source material. We finished off by taking a Buzzfeed quiz about the book genre that best suited everybody's individual personalities.
