Since the kids I mentor with Richa love the performing arts, we began part 1 of a series where we talk about our own experiences with cultural performing arts! We began by asking the kids if they've ever witnessed a cultural performance, what sorts of sights and sounds were involved in it, and how it made them feel. I then went into the details about my personal journey with Irish dance. I told the kids about the competitive aspect with its different levels and the many different contemporary and traditional performance routines we do. They even got to watch some videos with a few examples. We ended by learning five new vocabulary words from Gaelic that are frequently used in the Irish dance community. The kids had fun learning and asking questions about my experiences with rince (that means "dance" in Gaelic)! Tune in next week to hear about Richa's cultural dance journey!
